Getting involved may seem like a commitment that requires time and thought and there may be reasons why now is not the right time. But there are other ways that you can support the Home that don’t involve much more than having a good day out. We organise our own charity Golf Classic, and are part of the Rotary Charity Regatta annually. We also host an annual Art Exhibition of our own artist’s works. And if retail therapy is more your thing, we offer various gift items and other merchandise for sale from time to time. You can look out for current information here. SNAPSHOTS 2008 Sunshine’s art exhibition 2008 entitled “Snapshots” which ran in May at the Ken Done Gallery was a huge success. Snapshots showcased in the region of 80 brilliant works done over the year by 16 artists with intellectual disabilities from Sunshine. Each work was a “snapshot” from their life – a significant moment, a happy thought, an image – which had captured their imagination and remained in their memory. They had invested much time and effort in their art and dedicated many weeks and months to the completion of their works, and their efforts were rewarded with a great number of paintings being sold. In January 2008, our Art Studio moved back to Pymble. Clients now access sessions in the studio with the maximum amount of ease and minimal logistic issues. As many as 30 clients a week have access to closely supervised art sessions at the Studio under the very able supervision of Cecilia. Ms Cecilia Allison, in her own right a practising artist, has helped the clients to improve their techiniques and has stepped up the quality of the works produced by the clients. In an exciting new development, we were thrilled to welcome on board GE Commercial Finance as major sponsors of the Art Programme. GE’s sponsorship provides funds crucial for materials and support for the clients, without which they would not be able to access and explore the opportunities that they currently do within the Art Programme. The exhibition itself, which means so much and gives voice to people with intellectual disabilities would not have been possible without the continued support of : Mr Ian Sellers, Action Framing in Cromer for sponsoring the cost of framing the clients’ works. Holiday Inn Potts Point, for sponsoring the delectable finger foods and canapés . Northern Sydney Youth Orchestra, who for the first time this year supported us with entertainment during the evening from their young musicians. Being themselves a not-for-profit group, it is inspiring that these young musicians are choosing to support Sunshine.Sunshine’s new Business Centre at Thornleigh In November 2007, MailPlus and Employment Solutions moved from Pymble into 660sqm of purpose fitted premises at Lymoore Avenue in Thornleigh. They were joined by the teams from Flexible Respite Care and Hornsby Lifestyles, who have moved into the offices on the second floor. For the 44 clients who work in MailPlus, the new premises are great. In addition to generous work stations, there is now also a lunch room, a waiting area and outdoor seating, the furnishings for which were thoughtfully funded by the Sunshine Community Network. Easy access to buses and trains to and from the Normanhurst station and a sheltered arrival area make travel to and from work convenient for clients from both MailPlus and Employment Solutions. The feel of the area is more “comfortable” as no longer are we faced with the busy traffic at Pymble during drop offs and pick ups. Access has also been improved for commercial deliveries by trucks and additional storage and space for new machinery has increased work capacity threefold. MailPlus offers the following services :
with the objective of providing meaningful employment opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities . Farewell to our Chairman Farewell is much too final for our liking; so we say the “Fare you well” part of that word to our ex-Chairman, Mr Andrew Marr, but not our “Goodbye”. On the 19th February 2008, Sunshine held a farewell dinner for Andrew G Marr. Andrew joined the Board of Sunshine in 1976 as a Director. In 1983, he was appointed Deputy Chairman and in 2006 became Chairman until his retirement last year. The growth and complexity of the not for profit sector requires strong leadership from the Board and the Senior Management, and under Andrew’s leadership, Sunshine achieved much. But the chapter hasn’t quite closed yet – or at least we haven’t let it! Whilst retired from the Board, Andrew continues his involvement with Sunshine Home by providing his expertise and support in the area of Risk Management, specifically in the use of Tickit System. You see…we never let the good ones get away! Golf Classic 2008 With our major sponsors Waterbrook Greenwich and Parkview Constructions leading the way again, 23 teams put their skills to the test for the top 3 placings which were taken out by the Riverside Boys, Cleantastic 2 and KPD. But the day wasn’t just about winning. As Mr Kevin Ryan from Waterbrook Greenwich said in his address, “we consider it an integral way of giving back to such a worthwhile organisation.” But the real winner was Sunshine. There’s more to “fundraising” events than meets the eye. Actual “fundraising” is just the one part of it; no less important is the opportunity to introduce the work that we do to the community. And if Sunshine was the ultimate winner…Barry Daniel had to be the star player! Playing in his second Sunshine Golf Classic, our client and resident golf maniac Barry teamed up with his best mates Brendan Barnes ( NSW PGA Golf Pro from Antill Park Golf Club and the secret to Barry’s swing ) and Jeffrey Newman ( Sunshine staff member who aids and abets Barry’s golf habit ) to put in a very commendable game ! We thank you all for contributing to the day’s success. We couldn’t have done it without you! We also say a special thank you to : ISO 9001:2000 ISO 9001:2000 provides a set of requirements that, if effectively implemented, will give you the confidence that the supplier in question can consistently provide goods and services that:
This is exactly what Sunshine would like to inspire in both our key stakeholders and the public at large – the confidence that we are consistent and proficient in our service provision; and for these reasons, Sunshine is in the process of implementing ISO 9001 : 2000 within the organization. Whenever ISO 9001:2000 refers to “products”, this also includes intangible products like services, or software.
It’s a very broad and comprehensive system of requirements that will have to be implemented across all the very different services and centres operated by Sunshine. Heading the Quality Department is Andrew Thompson, Quality Manager, assisted by Tracey Fitzpatrick, Occupational Health and Safety Coordinator. We are proud to assume this responsibility and you’ll be the first to know when we receive our certification ! Makeover Nobody can say “No” to a makeover with the promise that it brings of a new look and renewed spirit. When the Community Access Program opened its doors after the holidays this year, they were new doors that led to “new” premises. Over the holidays, the ground floor at Pymble underwent a serious makeover with amazing results. The area that used to house Greenwich MailPlus and Employment Solutions is now home to our Art Studio, our Papermaking Studio, 2 Community Participation lounges, a meeting Room and a lunch room. In addition to that, there’s a “green” corridor filled with plants and individual settings of tables and chairs for clients to enjoy a little personal space if they so desire. Pymble is now a hive of activity as clients, old and new alike engage in all sorts of different activities throughout the day. With the Art and Papermaking studios on site now, client participation in those 2 programmes has increased owing to the ease of access and logistics. About 30 clients now participate in papermaking workshops and more than 20 clients now attend the Art programme. Other activities for the day are launched from the Day Service Room after plans and discussions reach consensus for the myriad of activities on offer. And as with any sort of makeover, the place looks and feels great; a feeling that is reflected in the staff and clients with increased energy levels and enthusiasm ! We’d like to thank everyone who made a donation towards the cost of the works done. It’s made a real difference in the lives of the clients who spend many of their days there !
