Artistic Collaboration 2008
Artistic Collaboration is an inaugural collaboration between Year 9 Art elective students at Abbotsleigh and artist clients from Sunshine. It has begun this June with the clients visiting the school to meet the students that they will be working with so that they can get to know each other a little and talk about what they might be working on together when Term 3 commences.

In Term 3, our clients will go to Abbotsleigh for 6 to 8 sessions of workshops with the girls where they will design and complete their collaborative pieces of art. They will work in 6 groups and each group will produce at least one if not more pieces of art together. In October, from the 10th to the 30th, the works will be on displayed at the Ku-ring-gai Art Centre.

Much credit is due to the students and staff of Abbotsleigh for rising to the challenge and their active pursuit of service-learning opportunities.

Sunshine is grateful to ANZ for the valuable support it has extended for this project,  without which the experience that Artistic Collaboration 08 affords our clients may not have been possible.

KU Grandstand Preschool
Over Christmas we were thrilled to once again receive a carload of Christmas gifts for our clients from the children at KU Grandstand. For the 3rd year running now, the children each bring in a gift at Christmas time for our clients; and the school delivers them to us just before Christmas. We are touched by the care taken to select the gift with the school taking the time to guide the children with information about how many men and women there are and what they might like to receive.

Cordonys
Our favourite Deli in Turramurra has to be Cordonys – not just because they happen to have the best sandwiches and fingerfood…but also because they always have Sunshine on their minds. In February this year, the team at Cordonys surprised us again with $180.00 that they raised for us!  Their thoughtful support is deeply appreciated by all!

Macquarie Group Foundation and Live Payments
Macquarie Group Foundation and Live Payments Pty Ltd
In late 2006, Macquarie Group Limited established the Lime Taxi business and Live Payments Pty Ltd. The Lime Taxi business was established to provide improved transportation facilities for people with disabilities. At the same time, Macquarie Bank Ltd committed that Live Payments would make annual donations to charities for people with disabilities. Sunshine is privileged to receive $8500 from Live Payments and Macquarie Group Foundation this year and is deeply grateful for the possibilities this presents for us in terms of being able to augment and expand the services we provide to people with disabilities.

Dee Why RSL Club supports Frenchs Forest

Sunshine is thrilled to receive the support of the Dee Why RSL Club again in this new financial year! Dee Why RSL’S generous donation to Frenchs Forest Flexible Lifestyles last year allowed them to purchase a range of equipment for their sensory room. As a result, the clients are able to enjoy a range of interaction and stimulation through light and motion sensitive equipment. For the clients at French Forest who have higher support needs, these are sometimes the only means of interaction and stimulation that they can initiate themselves.

With this years funding, Frenchs Forest will be setting up a Ball Room to facilitate physical activity and muscle tone for their clients. For some, this is crucial to delay the need to be in wheelchairs. We are grateful to the Dee Why RSL Club for their active concern and support for the less advantaged within their community. Watch this spot for pics of the Ball Room once its set up !

Hunters Hill Quilters

There is something comforting about quilts; and I’ve come to believe that it comes from the love with which they are crafted. Quite above and beyond the artistry in the exquisite design of the quilts themselves, the kind, patient hands that put them together imbue the quilts with love and the comfort that love brings.

That’s what makes the gifts from the Hunters Hill Quilters so very special to us. The fact that so many hands and hearts dedicated so many hours fashioning quilts for our residents at Parklea. Last December, our Parklea resident, Nada Parsons accompanied Gail Jeltes, General Manager, Corporate Relations to visit the quilters and to collect 7 gorgeous quilts that were made especially for the residents of Parklea.

We are so grateful for the support the Hunter’s Hill Quilters have shown Sunshine  in choosing to dedicate their time to making exquisite quilts for us and applaud their community spirit. Special thanks to Ms Jill Regnis, Community Relations Officer, for getting in touch with us and to all the ladies at the Hunters Hill Quilters.

Sunshine Dinner 2007

The inaugural Sunshine Dinner was hosted on the 30th of November 2007.

The date the 30th of November was chosen for its proximity to the 3rd of December, International Day of People with Disabilities. This allowed us also to mark the occasion and celebrate the achievements of our clients.

The dinner following in the wake of a season of political rallies had more of an agenda than a political rally itself! We launched the new official logo for Sunshine, appointed an inaugural ambassador for Sunshine in the person of The Hon. Warwick Smith and introduced our new Chairman, Mr Martin Laverty.

On the night, brilliant inspirational speaker Mr Bruce Sullivan also launched his first book – “Hannah’s Christmas Gift” and enthralled us all with his fast paced presentation which provided us with many preferable perspectives on life’s sometimes challenging situations. Bruce also gave Sunshine an unexpected early “ Christmas” gift – a $10,000 donation, plus the proceeds of all book that were sold that evening.

And the entertainment continued in the hands of our MC for the evening, Mr Andrew Buchanan, Chairperson,  Disability Council NSW. A long time supporter and friend of Sunshine, Andrew informed and entertained with his wealth of knowledge about disability services and his wicked sense of humour !

Beautiful entertainment of the melodic variety was provided by Nuage Swing, our volunteer musicians for the evening comprising  Mr John Dabron on violin and Mr Campbell Atkins, and Mr Stuart McVicar on guitars.

The generosity didn’t stop there and many guests that evening took part in our silent and grand auctions of fine wines from all our sponsors. The evening was a huge success – apart from raising in the region of $20,000, it celebrated the lives of the people that we support and the work that we do, and introduced Sunshine to many new friends and supporters.

We are grateful to our sponsors :
Holiday Inn Potts Point
Sir James Hardy, Hardy Wine Company
Mr Bill Anderson, Blue Pyrenees Estate
Mr Jim Williams, Williams Wines
Mr Greg Pullen, Yalumba Wines
Mr Bob Hunt, Rosebay Drive In Liquor Store

And our heartfelt thanks go to :
Mr Andrew Buchanan
Mr Bruce Sullivan
